WHAT TO WEAR THIS SPRING
It seems like just overnight blossoms are on the trees, daffodils dot the ground and everything is dappled in a vibrant, fresh green. Are we there yet?! For the first time in a year, I’m starting to feel hopeful, dare I say, even excited about a return to (somewhat) normal life. All I want to do is wear a pretty dress out to a fabulous dinner with friends, preferably in a foreign location! Honestly, my warped fashion brain has been looking at sandals and sundresses since December, but as we finally creep into spring, I can see the fashion future and I’m excited to inject some style back into life! Here are 5 spring trends I’m most excited about…
ONE: RELAXED DENIM
Nobody panic, it’s going to be ok! While I’m not in the Gen Z camp of “burn all the skinny jeans”, I definitely feel a yearning for a fresh denim silhouette. In my humble opinion, skinny jeans are now a classic. There are always going to be times when you want a leaner pant to make a look feel balanced and in proper proportion, but if you want an update, try a relaxed straight, bootcut or flare style. Just about any of these are also offered in cropped versions that are perfect for spring and summer. Girlfriend styles also still feel relevant. How these styles fit and what to wear with them are absolutely key to making sure they’re flattering. Check out my Fit to Flatter guide on pants here if you missed it!
*The Madewell and Pilcro jeans below are available in petite, tall, and plus sizes in various washes!
TWO: THE STATEMENT BLOUSE
Can’t stop, won’t stop! The statement blouse has comfortably settled into fashion rotation for the past few years, but after a year of leggings and sweatshirts I’m extra ready for a bold, beautiful blouse! Strategic ruffles, dramatic sleeves, bright colors and prints can define what a statement is for you. Don’t be scared to try this, but you’ve gotta own it! Fabric with a nice drape is helpful to tame any oversize details, but is the piece still proportionately flattering to you? Are you wearing the blouse or is the blouse wearing you? Once you try it on trust me, you’ll know! These are some of my spring picks. Please note, you do NOT see any of those oversize pilgrim collars listed here. Unless you’re planning to churn some butter, please do not attempt that look at home!
THREE: THINK PINK
While the Pantones of the year might be Illuminating (yellow) and Ultimate Gray, there is nothing as decidedly playful, and optimistic as bubblegum pink! Whether you want to accent with a pop of a pink sandal or go all in with a pink suit, leaning into a color trend allows you to easily adopt it however you feel comfortable. I dare you not to have a great day when you’re wearing it!
FOUR: SLIDES
In keeping with the ease and comfort of the past year, slides are an elevated alternative to a flip-flop. A lot of my clients, myself included, have a love-hate relationship with slides. Without the right fit they can be slippery suckers and hard to wear, but it’s so lovely to just slip them on and off without any effort! Look for a style that allows the straps to sit higher on top of the foot. If the straps don’t fit snugly, they’re likely too wide and it’s best to try another style.
FIVE: THE PANTS FORMERLY KNOWN AS CARGO
Yep, you can call them utility pants now. This casual, comfortable pant adds an edge to feminine blouses and relaxes a sharp blazer looks. Don’t lose yourself in baggy styles and stay hyper aware of where the pockets hit on your body. You want to steer clear of adding bulk where you may not want it! I prefer a classic and versatile olive tone, but a washed black or gray compliments lots of other colors too. A banded bottom gives them a jogger vibe that looks cool with sneakers and sandals.
