Five Fall Trends (Anyone Can Wear)

I hope you’re sitting down, I’m about to bust a major fashion myth for you. Oscar De La Renta never showed cerulean gowns in 2002. Do you know what that means? Miranda Priestly’s entire “cerulean blue sweater” monologue in the Devil Wears Prada is based on lies! It never occurred to me to fact check it until now as I begin to write about this year’s fall trends. (To be fair, in 2006, we weren’t quite as inundated with social media and immediate resources, but as a fashion nerd, I do feel some shame.)

"Is something funny?"  (Click to refresh your memory of the classic clip!)

Miranda’s speech was meant to explain the power of the fashion industry to inspire trends and direct consumer choices, but the truth is, trends don’t necessarily start from the top down. As much as we’re influenced by what’s available to us in stores, designers find inspiration everywhere; from younger generations and pop culture, to art and current events; their job is to inspire us and create clothes that respond to the constantly changing demands of modern life.

Trends are typically established by the ready to wear shows shown the season prior. If an item, color, silhouette etc. is created by multiple designers, you can be assured that those ideas will be snatched up by the broader market and make their way to racks near you.

Wearing a new trend can feel exhilarating and encourage you to make a new discovery about yourself, but if you don’t discriminate you may easily end up a fashion victim. Just because it’s a trend doesn’t mean you have to wear it! There are plenty of ways to explore a trend without falling prey to becoming a stage five fashion clinger.

After an overwhelmingly positive response to my fall trend blog last year, I’ve compiled again what I consider to be some of the most wearable Autumn/Winter fashion trends for 2024. I’ve simplified these key trends to their essence of what, why, and how. What is the trend, why you should consider it, and how to incorporate it into your wardrobe. Each board is linked to my shoppable site on Goodpix where you can find each item linked, as well as many more options!

So when is the best time to start shopping for the upcoming season? Many fall shipments start arriving in September and remain robust through November. Shop early for the best selection and later for the best deals.

Don’t want to shop alone? Book an appointment now to assess your closet and we’ll make a plan to build a chic, fall/winter wardrobe that works for you!
