Five Spring Trends to Spark Joy

The other day, while driving home, I spotted a woman walking down the sidewalk in a bold, multi-colored, leopard print coat. Against the drab grey of a February sky, my first thought was, "Now that's a happy coat!"

I've never been particularly a "winter person," but this year it has felt especially challenging. The world feels heavy—and just about every friend and client I've spoken to feels the same way. Why is it that life’s challenges seem to find us so easily and joy often feels so elusive?

Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away called Chicago, I studied improv and sketch at the famous Second City Improv Theatre. My favorite part of studying and performing there was creating charmingly weird and quirky characters. Whether I was walking down Michigan Avenue, sitting in a nail salon, or waiting at a bus stop, I was on high alert—watching, listening, and constantly in pursuit of whatever comedic gold I could steal for class. Even in the most mundane situations, my antenna was up, delighting in the glorious weirdness of the people around me. Inspiration was everywhere, and I was there for it.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that finding joy is a lot like writing a funny sketch while you're stuck on jury duty—you have to actively seek it out. You have to choose joy. And the more you look for it, the more it starts showing up.

Like the music we choose to play in our cars, what we choose to wear affects our mood, our confidence, and how we interact with the world around us. Spring feels like a natural invitation to make happier choices—and with the fresh season nearly upon us, I've compiled five fashion trends that have sparked my joy in recent weeks. Hopefully, they’ll do the same for you. XO
